Mercer’s Narasimhan Wins State Geography Bee

Partha Narasimhan, a sixth-grader at Mercer Middle School, placed first in the 2007 Virginia Geography Bee held Friday, March 30th, at Old Dominion University in Norfolk.

He will now go on to represent Virginia at the national finals May 22-23 at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C. As the state winner, Partha receives $100 and the trip to Washington, D.C. The national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship.

This is the second year Partha has placed at the Virginia Geography Bee. He placed third last year as a fifth-grader at Hutchison Farm Elementary.

Tatiana Lozano, a seventh-grader at J. Lupton Simpson Middle School, placed third in the state bee. Yohan Sumathipala, a seventh-grader at Farwmell Station Middle School, finished in the top 10. (Yohan placed second a year ago.)

In all, 10 Loudoun County Public Schools students competed in the state bee. The other LCPS students who competed included:

  • Junaid Ahmed, Sterling Middle School
  • Christopher deSteuben, Belmont Ridge Middle School
  • Jake Fossum, Newton-Lee Elementary
  • Daniel Kang, River Bend Middle School
  • Tommy Lunn, Potowmack Elementary
  • Christopher Miller, Blue Ridge Middle School
  • Wallace Teska, Smart’s Mill Middle School

These students won their school-level geography bee then took a qualifying test, which was submitted to the National Geographic Society. In each of the 50 states and in five U.S. territories, the National Geographic Society invited the students with the top 100 scores to compete at the state level.
