Cave animals

Many animals, including beetles, raccoons, and
salamanders, live near the entrances of caves. Bats roost in caves during
the day, and many bears hibernate in small caves during the winter. Only
creatures that have adapted to total darkness can live in the depths of
caves.
There is no light at all deep inside a cave. Many of
the animals that live there are blind, but their senses of smell and touch
are often very sharp. They feed on decaying plant and animal matter
carried underground by streams. No green plants can grow inside a cave.
Some
cave dwellers create their own light! The bluish lights in this picture
are glow worms in New Zealandīs Waitomo cave.
