Charles Darwin
The theory of evolution is based on the ideas of
English scientist Charles Darwin. In 1831, Darwin sailed around the
world and studied plants, animals, and rocks. On his trip, he began to
wonder if some of the animals he saw had the same ancestors.
Darwin explained his ideas in a book called On
the Origin of Species, published in 1859. This cartoon shows that people
laughed at Darwin's idea that humans were related to apes.

Although Darwin gets credit for the theory of
evolution, he wasn't the only one to think of it. Alfred Wallace,
another English scientist, put forth a very similar theory just before
Darwin's book was published.
