Fossils
are the remains of plants and animals that have been preserved for
thousands or even millions of years. Most fossils are formed from the
actual remains of living things - bones, shells, and leaves. But they
can also be traces such as footprints and droppings. Without fossils, we
would never have known that dinosaurs once lived on Earth, or that there
used to be lions in North America.
