How fossils form
When
an animal dies, its soft parts rot away quickly, but if its bones or
shell are buried in mud they may turn to stone and form a fossil. Over
millions of years, water seeps through the mud and dissolves the shell
or bone, leaving a hollow, or mold.
Minerals
in the water may harden in the mold to form a cast.
