Fossils

How fossils form

When an animal dies, its soft parts rot away quickly, but if its bones or shell are buried in mud they may turn to stone and form a fossil. Over millions of years, water seeps through the mud and dissolves the shell or bone, leaving a hollow, or mold. Minerals in the water may harden in the mold to form a cast.
