Islands and evolution
Island animals and plants are
separated from those that live on the mainland. Because of this, the
evolution, or development, of these plants and animals often takes a
different turn.

Charles Darwin was a British
scientist who studied life on the Galápagos Islands. He suggested that all
of the Galápagos tortoises were related, but that each type of tortoise
had changed slightly over many years because it was isolated on its own
island.
Giant
tortoises weighing 500 pounds (230 kg) are found on the Galápagos Islands
off Ecuador. These large creatures are found nowhere else in the world.
There is a different kind of giant tortoise on each island in the
Galápagos.
