Dal Fry
Serves: 4

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Toovar dal

  • 21/2 cups Water

  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder

  • 3 tablespoons Oil

  • 3/4 cup Chopped onions

  • 1 teaspoon Chopped garlic

  • 1 teaspoon Chopped ginger

  • 1 teaspoon Chopped green chilies

  • 1/2 teaspoon Cumin seeds

  • 1 pinch Asafetida

  • 1 cup Chopped tomatoes

  • 1 teaspoon Chili powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder

  • 1/4 cup Chopped coriander leaves

  • Salt

Method

  1. Wash and soak the dal in 21/2 cups of water for about 30 minutes. Pressure cook till the dal is done. Cook uncovered further on a medium flame for 2 minutes. Do not mash the dal.

  2. Heat oil in a small pan, add the chopped onion, garlic, ginger, green chilies and cumin seeds. Fry on a medium flame for about 3-4 minutes, stirring often.

  3. Add the turmeric powder, chili powder, salt, and chopped tomatoes and fry on a high flame for 3 minutes. Add into the cooked dal and mix well.

  4. Serve hot garnished with coriander leaves.
